The essentials
- An insulated bag or small cooler with ice packs (cheese and charcuterie wilt fast in the sun)
- A blanket with a waterproof backing — lawns are often irrigated in the morning
- Plates, napkins, a cutting board and a small knife
- Unbreakable wine glasses (many parks and beaches ban glass)
- A corkscrew — though you'll usually buy an opened bottle at the winery
- Water: more than you think
- Sunscreen, hats, and a layer for the evening chill
- A trash bag to pack everything out

- Outside wine or alcohol if you're picnicking at a winery

- Anything that needs an open flame, unless the park has designated grills
