Family-friendly picnic spots in Napa Valley

American Canyon

Clarke Ranch is American Canyon's gateway to the Napa River wetlands, with lawn and picnic seating next to flat trails through restored marsh. It's a handy stop at the southern entrance to Napa Valley. Whether you can open wine depends on whether the picnic area is signed as a designated picnic area.

Napa

Fuller Park is Napa's historic, shady neighborhood park, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, in Old Town near downtown. Nine tree-named picnic sites and a new inclusive playground make it an easy family lunch stop, but alcohol needs a reserved site and permit.

A pioneering kosher winery on the Silverado Trail just north of the city of Napa, pouring its wines on a garden patio next to the vines. Hagafen openly invites guests to bring their own snacks, and it's both dog- and family-friendly.

St. Helena

A working 1840s water-powered grist mill on a wooded creekside site just north of St. Helena, now a state historic park operated by the Napa County Regional Park & Open Space District with the Napa Valley State Parks Association. Weekend visitors can watch the miller grind grain, buy stone-ground flour and picnic at tables around the mill.

St. Helena

Napa's historic big-name estate (founded 1876 and celebrating 150 years in 2026), with hand-dug caves and the ornate Rhine House. It isn't a picnic destination, but its visitor FAQ does allow outside food at picnic benches on the edge of the property, which is handy if you're touring St. Helena with a packed lunch.

St. Helena

Crane Park is where St. Helena locals hold birthday picnics and bocce afternoons, and city code allows beer and wine. Reserve a picnic area and a couple of lighted bocce courts for a group. On summer Fridays the farmers market sets up here.

Rutherford

A family-owned Rutherford winery best known for Sauvignon Blanc and a strong sustainability story. It is one of the more family- and dog-friendly stops in mid-valley, with a picnic area where you can eat your own food before or after a tasting.

Oakville

A relaxed Highway 29 tasting room in Oakville that openly encourages guests to bring a picnic to go with an outdoor tasting. Picnic tables, lawn games and a very dog-friendly attitude make it one of the easiest BYO-food stops in the heart of the valley.

Rutherford

A small, multi-generation family winery on Highway 29 in Rutherford whose picnic lawn is free for guests. Book the $45 Heritage Tasting outdoors, bring your own lunch, and let kids and leashed dogs relax on the grass for up to two hours. It's one of the most genuinely family-friendly BYO spots in mid-valley.

Yountville

A 73-acre ecological reserve just east of Yountville, owned by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and stewarded since 2008 by the Napa County Regional Park & Open Space District. It protects one of the valley's last stands of valley oak riverside forest; locals come for short river walks, birding and summer swims, making it a no-frills blanket picnic spot.

Yountville

Yountville's downtown park combines a picnic with bocce, and town code allows beer and wine here. It's on Washington Street, so you can walk over with a bottle from a tasting room and a takeout lunch. Book Site 5 and the bocce courts for a group of up to about 75.

A rare Napa Valley town park where a bottle of wine with your picnic is legal: Yountville code allows beer and wine here. Group sites have charcoal grills and hold about 50, and a big playground keeps kids busy. Reserve a site through the town's online system for a party, or grab an open table.

Pope Valley

A family winery founded in the 1890s in rustic Chiles Valley/Sage Canyon east of the main valley, reached by scenic Highway 128. Tastings are held outdoors in the homestead backyard, and you're encouraged to bring a picnic and stay. It's one of the most old-school, unpretentious picnic stops in Napa County.

Lake Berryessa

The main public day-use area on Lake Berryessa's west shore, run by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation about 8 miles up Knoxville Road from Highway 128. It combines lakeside picnic sites with grills, drinking water and restrooms, reservable group shade shelters and swimming beaches.

Lake Berryessa

A campground and marina on Lake Berryessa's northwest shore, about half a mile north of Pope Canyon Road, run by Royal Elk Park Management under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. A day pass covers lake access, a first-come picnic area by the launch ramp, swimming and rentals, at a higher price than Reclamation's own Oak Shores.

Calistoga

A wooded state park on Highway 29 between St. Helena and Calistoga, run by the Napa County Regional Park & Open Space District under an operating agreement with California State Parks. It offers one of the few large public picnic grounds in the upper Napa Valley, with grills, a reservable group ramada, a summer pool, camping and more than 10 miles of trails.

Calistoga

A small Calistoga estate founded in 2006 by veteran winemaker Nils Venge and Mark Carter, with a relaxed patio looking toward Old Faithful Geyser. Walk-ins can buy a bottle to enjoy on the estate, and 2024–2026 picnic guides say you can bring your own food to the patio.

Calistoga

Pioneer Park is Calistoga's downtown picnic spot, with a gazebo, playground and barbecue pits a short walk from Lincoln Avenue. It's good for a takeout lunch, but unlike Yountville and St. Helena, Calistoga bans beer and wine in parks unless it's part of an approved event.

Carneros

A long-running family winery in Carneros growing organic, dry-farmed grapes. Unusually for Napa, it still takes walk-ins and pours at an old-fashioned stand-up bar. There's a picnic area for lunch, a $30 tasting, and a welcome for kids and dogs, making it one of the best budget picnic stops at the south end of the valley.

Stags Leap & Silverado Trail

A Stags Leap District Cabernet house on the Silverado Trail with hillside caves. Its bookable Garden View Seating is one of the few ways to picnic in the Stags Leap area: bring your own food, buy a bottle, and relax in a shaded garden with ridgeline views.
