Free picnic spots in Sonoma County

Sonoma

A historic winery set inside Bartholomew Park, a 375-acre private preserve on Sonoma's east side with free parking, oak-shaded picnic tables and about three miles of hiking trails. It is one of the few Sonoma Valley spots where you can picnic without buying anything, and wine to go is sold for the park.

The rocky headland at the mouth of Bodega Harbor is the Sonoma Coast's classic whale-watching lookout, and it's free. Pack a windproof layer, claim a table at the west lot, then walk the 1.9-mile Bodega Head loop for views over Bodega Bay and the open ocean.

A small, free county park at the Guerneville bridge that works well for a quick riverside lunch or a paddle launch, with flush restrooms, accessible paths and first-come group tables. It is one of the few county parks with a year-round alcohol ban, so it is not the place to open a winery bottle.

A classic small-town green space and the heart of Sebastopol's festival calendar, with a pool, playground, ball field, stage and creek-side picnic areas. It's a pleasant, free stop for a family picnic, but drinking there requires a police-approved city permit.

Cloverdale

The northernmost Sonoma County river park, just off Highway 101 in Cloverdale, with a flat 1-mile paved trail, a boat launch and simple picnic areas along the Russian River. It's a handy, low-key lunch stop at the top of Alexander Valley or on the way to Anderson Valley, and alcohol isn't banned.

Healdsburg

A small County river-beach park at the foot of Fitch Mountain, a few minutes east of downtown Healdsburg, with a picnic area and stairs down to the water. Unlike nearby Veterans Memorial Beach, it isn't on the County's alcohol-ban list, so it's the Healdsburg-area riverside picnic where a bottle of wine is allowed by default.

Healdsburg's best-equipped city park for a group picnic: shaded tables with barbecues, a bocce court and a playground, close to downtown. It suits birthday parties and family reunions, but it is not a place to open a wine bottle, because City code bans alcohol in every park except the Plaza.

A small, quiet regional park in the oak-dotted hills just east of Rohnert Park, with 3.5 miles of trails, a creek-side path and an 18-hole disc golf course. It is a no-frills spot for an uncrowded picnic and a short walk, with spring wildflowers as the seasonal bonus.

A compact wilderness park on Petaluma's southwest edge with about 6 miles of trails over grassy hills and through oak woodland, a fishing pond, and ridge-top viewpoints over the city and the southern Sonoma countryside. The surviving wing of General Mariano Vallejo's Rancho de Petaluma, once the largest privately owned adobe in Northern California, restored with period workrooms and living quarters on a rural rise east of town. Its parking-lot picnic area makes an easy history-plus-lunch stop, but the park is strictly alcohol-free.

A 211-acre oak-woodland park in east Windsor with three bass-and-bluegill ponds and nearly 7 miles of trails, from a flat pond loop to a steep ridge climb. Tables dotted around the ponds make it a quiet, dog-friendly picnic spot with no County alcohol ban.

An 850-acre County park in the Mayacamas foothills on Windsor's southeast edge, known mostly for hiking and horseback riding. Its entrance picnic area, with lawn, oaks, a gazebo and barbecues, is a pleasant post-hike lunch spot or a group-party site, and alcohol isn't banned.

Windsor

Windsor's downtown lawn and event stage, a pleasant free place for a blanket picnic with a playground nearby and shops across the street. It's liveliest on summer Thursday concert nights with the farmers market. The Town's 2025 park policy says you need a permit to drink here, even though the code only bans alcohol where a ban is posted, so leave the bottle in the car unless you've called ahead.
