Groups: Picnic sites are first-come, first-served. The park map shows a group area near the beach, but Steelhead is not on the county's list of reservable group picnic sites; county policy says gatherings of 25 or more need a group-site reservation, so call the ranger station at (707) 565-3112 before bringing a large group.
Dogs: Leashed dogs allowed (6-ft max), including on the beach; they must stay leashed even while swimming.
Hours: Daily 7am to sunset
Season: Open year-round. Busy on summer weekends, when the entrance closes temporarily once the lot fills (a Regional Parks River Shuttle runs from El Molino High School in Forestville). Free loaner life vests on the beach in summer; tube rentals bookable online.
House rules: Alcohol: prohibited, including open containers, in the park and on the beach from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. This is a posted ban under Sonoma County Code §20-13, which bars drinking only where the park authority has ordered and posted a prohibition; outside that window the county default allows alcohol unless posted. Also: no fires or barbecues on the beach; countywide, charcoal and wood BBQs are banned on Red Flag, high-wind and Spare the Air days (gas allowed unless noticed); no amplified music; no bounce houses, confetti or mylar balloons; no smoking or vaping; dogs on a 6-ft leash even while swimming; pack out tubes and rafts; no lifeguards.

What the picnic area is like

Picnic tables sit by the parking lot, a short walk from a broad sand-and-gravel beach on a natural, wooded bend of the Russian River. The 26-acre park is ringed by cottonwood, maple and ash woods with a stand of redwoods near River Road, and a nearly one-mile loop of riverside trails.

About Steelhead Beach Regional Park

Sonoma County's main Russian River beach park near Forestville is a summer swimming, paddling and tubing hub, with picnic areas and flush restrooms right by the lot. It's the usual starting point for tube floats down to Sunset Beach. Leave the wine at home in summer: alcohol is banned from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

A small county river park west of Forestville with a rocky beach and one of the prettier views on this stretch of the Russian River, toward the Hacienda Bridge and redwood hills.
