Where to picnic with a group in Sonoma County

Guerneville & Monte Rio

A protected grove of ancient coast redwoods just north of Guerneville, with some of the tallest and oldest trees in the county and easy, level trails. The picnic grounds are the main draw for groups: dozens of first-come tables and grills in permanent shade, plus a big reservable group site. Whether you can open a bottle of wine there is not spelled out on official pages, so confirm before you pack one.

Guerneville & Monte Rio

A small, free county park at the Guerneville bridge that works well for a quick riverside lunch or a paddle launch, with flush restrooms, accessible paths and first-come group tables. It is one of the few county parks with a year-round alcohol ban, so it is not the place to open a winery bottle.

Sebastopol

A relaxed West County barn pouring organically grown wines and local hard cider among gardens and orchards outside Sebastopol. It's one of the few Sonoma tasting rooms with a clearly posted, flat-fee picnic policy.

Dry Creek Valley

A small organic estate on Dry Creek Road known for sparkling wines and Rhône varieties. It openly invites guests to bring a picnic to their tasting and is friendly to kids and dogs.

Healdsburg

A wine-country hub two minutes from downtown Healdsburg where several small family wineries share one property. Its piazza, shaded tables and bocce courts make it an easy place to picnic between tastings, and weekend wood-fired pizza fills in if you forget lunch.

Dry Creek Valley

A casual, family-owned winery at the north end of West Dry Creek Road with tastings in underground caves or out on the lawn. It has a long reputation as a laid-back picnic spot: bring lunch from town, grab a table or blanket on the lawn and add a glass or bottle.

Sonoma

A historic winery set inside Bartholomew Park, a 375-acre private preserve on Sonoma's east side with free parking, oak-shaded picnic tables and about three miles of hiking trails. It is one of the few Sonoma Valley spots where you can picnic without buying anything, and wine to go is sold for the park.

A relaxed neighborhood park a short walk from the Plaza, with bocce and petanque courts, a playground and public restrooms next to the picnic tables. At 3,400 acres, Tolay is one of Sonoma County's largest regional parks, filling a valley southeast of Petaluma around a seasonal lake that is sacred to the Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo. Its 11 miles of trails climb open ridges with views of San Pablo Bay, the San Francisco skyline and the Bay's bridges, making it a big-sky hike-and-picnic destination.

An 850-acre County park in the Mayacamas foothills on Windsor's southeast edge, known mostly for hiking and horseback riding. Its entrance picnic area, with lawn, oaks, a gazebo and barbecues, is a pleasant post-hike lunch spot or a group-party site, and alcohol isn't banned.

It's liveliest on summer Thursday concert nights with the farmers market. The Town's 2025 park policy says you need a permit to drink here, even though the code only bans alcohol where a ban is posted, so leave the bottle in the car unless you've called ahead.

Windsor's big community park, with a reservable group picnic area, grills, playgrounds and a stage. It's a free, easy family stop near the Russian River Valley wineries west of Highway 101.

Sonoma Coast

Sonoma County's first regional park is a long, sheltered strand of sand on Bodega Bay. It's the easiest Sonoma Coast beach for a relaxed family picnic, with tables, restrooms, a dune boardwalk and a reservable group site, and it's minutes from Bodega Bay's restaurants and shops if you need supplies.

Sonoma Coast

The reconstructed 1812 Russian-American Company outpost on the Kashia Pomo homeland of Metini sits on a marine terrace 12 winding miles north of Jenner. It's one of the few Sonoma Coast stops that pairs a picnic with real history, and you can eat at tables right inside the stockade. Bring everything with you, since the park sells no food.
