What the picnic area is like

A few picnic tables are scattered around the restored 1846 mill, its 36-foot waterwheel and the old granary beside Mill Creek, a short paved walk up from the parking lot off Highway 29. It is a small, quiet historic site for a sandwich between milling demonstrations rather than a lawn-and-games park; Bothe's bigger picnic grounds are a 1.1-mile trail walk away.

About Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park

A working 1840s water-powered grist mill on a wooded creekside site just north of St. Helena, now a state historic park operated by the Napa County Regional Park & Open Space District with the Napa Valley State Parks Association. Weekend visitors can watch the miller grind grain, buy stone-ground flour and picnic at tables around the mill.
