Season: Open year-round. The lagoon and summer crowds peak in warm months, and fog often burns off by midday.
House rules: Alcohol: Allowed under California State Parks rules unless posted otherwise. 14 CCR §4326 bans drinking only where a posted superintendent's order (§4301(i)) says so, and no such order for Sonoma Coast State Park appears on current park pages or the June 2026 infosheet. Check signs at the lot. No glass rule was found. No fires, dogs or horses on the North or South Salmon Creek beaches, and no fires or dogs on Bodega Dunes beach (western snowy plover habitat). The Sonoma Coast is not for swimming: rip currents, heavy surf and sneaker waves cause rescues every year, so keep kids above the high-water line.

What the picnic area is like

Nearly two miles of open sand run between the Bodega Dunes and the mouth of Salmon Creek, where a lagoon pools behind the beach in summer. The free North and South Salmon Creek lots have vault toilets, and most picnickers there just spread a blanket on the sand. The tables State Parks lists for this beach, about seven including accessible ones, are at the fee-charging Bodega Dunes day-use area at the south end.

About Salmon Creek Beach (Sonoma Coast State Park)

One of the longest, most popular sandy beaches on the Sonoma Coast, a short drive north of Bodega Bay. State Parks itself recommends a day of fishing and picnicking here. Bring a blanket for a free beach picnic from the Salmon Creek lots, or pay the day-use fee at Bodega Dunes for tables and restrooms.
