House rules
Alcohol: no Armstrong-specific rule found on official pages. State Parks regulation 14 CCR §4326 makes drinking an offense only where a posted superintendent's order (per §4301(i)) creates a no-alcohol area, and the Russian River Sector Special Events Guide (2024) contemplates alcohol at permitted events if the permittee carries $1M host-liquor liability. A third-party wedding-permit site (Feb 2026) says alcohol is not permitted anywhere in the park, so check posted signs at the kiosk. Other rules: leashed dogs only on the paved road and in developed picnic areas; no amplified music, generators or electrical hookups at the group area; group-area tables may not be moved; fires only in park grills/fire rings (no portable fire pits, per sector event rules); no drones; streams closed to fishing; quiet hours from 10pm.

What the picnic area is like

Two picnic areas sit on the floor of an old-growth coast redwood grove about three-quarters of a mile up the park road, with tables spread out beneath enormous trunks in deep, cool shade. A seasonal creek and small waterfall are close by, and you can drive in and park next to the tables.

About Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve

A protected grove of ancient coast redwoods just north of Guerneville, with some of the tallest and oldest trees in the county and easy, level trails. The picnic grounds are the main draw for groups: dozens of first-come tables and grills in permanent shade, plus a big reservable group site. Whether you can open a bottle of wine there is not spelled out on official pages, so confirm before you pack one.

Guerneville's best-known river beach is privately owned (the Joseph siblings bought it in late 2021) but open to day visitors for a parking fee during the summer season. It's a lively scene with swimming, boat and umbrella rentals and a snack shack. Wine you bought at a tasting room has to stay in the car, because outside alcohol and all glass are banned.

A small county river park west of Forestville with a rocky beach and one of the prettier views on this stretch of the Russian River, toward the Hacienda Bridge and redwood hills.
