Two sections of the park can be reserved for events ($50 per section per day on the city's fee schedule effective 8/23/2021, plus a special-event application fee and a refundable deposit equal to the rent). Serving alcohol at a reserved event needs the city's Possession and Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages application (SMC 9.36.030). Other rules: no smoking or vaping (SMC 7.24); dogs must be leashed and are barred from the playground area; park closed 11 p.m.-6 a.m. April-October and 9 p.m.-6 a.m. November-March (SMC 9.12.050). Outdoor fires are banned except in facilities built and designated for them (SMC 9.12.200), and no grills are listed.

What the picnic area is like

A 4.6-acre city park a couple of blocks north of the Plaza, laid out along the paved Sonoma City Trail beside the old railroad depot, which now houses a small history museum. Picnic tables share the grounds with bocce and petanque courts, a play structure, a sand volleyball court and a vintage train car, so it feels more like a neighborhood park than a tourist stop.

About Depot Park

A relaxed neighborhood park a short walk from the Plaza, with bocce and petanque courts, a playground and public restrooms next to the picnic tables. It's the downtown option for dog owners, since leashed dogs are welcome here but banned from the Plaza, and the same 11:30 a.m.-to-sunset drinking window applies.
