Other rules: no dogs anywhere on the Plaza, even leashed (service animals excepted); no smoking or vaping (SMC 7.24); no bikes, e-bikes or skateboards on the Plaza (SMC 9.12.140). Park hours are 6 a.m.-11 p.m. April-October and 6 a.m.-9 p.m. November-March (SMC 9.12.050). Outdoor fires are banned on city park land except in facilities built and designated for them (SMC 9.12.200), and no grills are listed, so leave the barbecue at home. Intoxicated or disorderly people can be ejected (SMC 9.12.220). No glass-container ban was found in the code.
What the picnic area is like
An eight-acre town square divided into quadrants around the 1908 stone City Hall, with lawns under big old shade trees. The southwest quadrant has a duck pond under one of the densest tree canopies, the southeast has a rose garden and fountain beneath sycamores, and the north side holds two playgrounds and open grass. Picnic tables are few (the city notes three in the shaded northeast quadrant), so most people spread a blanket on the lawn.

Sonoma's historic central square is the easiest picnic in the valley: grab food from the shops around it, claim a shady patch of lawn, and legally open a bottle between 11:30 a.m. and sunset.
