Where to picnic with a group in Napa Valley

Napa

Fuller Park is Napa's historic, shady neighborhood park, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, in Old Town near downtown. Nine tree-named picnic sites and a new inclusive playground make it an easy family lunch stop, but alcohol needs a reserved site and permit.

It's one of the most genuinely family-friendly BYO spots in mid-valley.

Napa's historic big-name estate (founded 1876 and celebrating 150 years in 2026), with hand-dug caves and the ornate Rhine House. It isn't a picnic destination, but its visitor FAQ does allow outside food at picnic benches on the edge of the property, which is handy if you're touring St. Helena with a packed lunch.

Crane Park is where St. Helena locals hold birthday picnics and bocce afternoons, and city code allows beer and wine. Reserve a picnic area and a couple of lighted bocce courts for a group. On summer Fridays the farmers market sets up here.

Yountville's downtown park combines a picnic with bocce, and town code allows beer and wine here. It's on Washington Street, so you can walk over with a bottle from a tasting room and a takeout lunch. Book Site 5 and the bocce courts for a group of up to about 75.

A wooded state park on Highway 29 between St. Helena and Calistoga, run by the Napa County Regional Park & Open Space District under an operating agreement with California State Parks. It offers one of the few large public picnic grounds in the upper Napa Valley, with grills, a reservable group ramada, a summer pool, camping and more than 10 miles of trails.

A relaxed Calistoga estate known for sparkling wine and Cabernet, with some of the best shade in the valley. The bookable Picnic & Bottle Service gives you a private table under huge old elms for 90 minutes. Bring your own food and buy a bottle there, or add the table to a tasting.

Pope Valley

A family winery founded in the 1890s in rustic Chiles Valley/Sage Canyon east of the main valley, reached by scenic Highway 128. Tastings are held outdoors in the homestead backyard, and you're encouraged to bring a picnic and stay. It's one of the most old-school, unpretentious picnic stops in Napa County.

Lake Berryessa

The main public day-use area on Lake Berryessa's west shore, run by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation about 8 miles up Knoxville Road from Highway 128. It combines lakeside picnic sites with grills, drinking water and restrooms, reservable group shade shelters and swimming beaches.

Napa Mountains

A family-owned Howell Mountain estate (founded 1996) offering a private 90-minute vineyard, winery and cave tour with tasting. Guests are welcome to stay for a picnic on the private patio afterward. It's a peaceful, crowd-free mountain alternative to the valley floor.

Carneros

A long-running family winery in Carneros growing organic, dry-farmed grapes. Unusually for Napa, it still takes walk-ins and pours at an old-fashioned stand-up bar. There's a picnic area for lunch, a $30 tasting, and a welcome for kids and dogs, making it one of the best budget picnic stops at the south end of the valley.
