Bodega Bay Picnic Day: Sonoma Coast Beaches, Bluffs & Seals

The best Bodega Bay picnic day is a loop from Sebastopol. Stock up at Andy's Produce Market and Wild Flour Bread on the way out, eat lunch at Doran Regional Park's sheltered tables on Bodega Bay, walk the cliffs at Bodega Head, watch the harbor seals at Goat Rock, and head home along the Russian River with a glass of wine at a Forestville winery. Nothing needs booking. Pack layers: the coast is often foggy and windy when the valleys are hot, and none of these picnic areas is covered.

Hours, fees and rules below are as of September 2026. The plan suits a Friday through Monday, when Wild Flour Bread is open.

Drive times are estimates, so allow extra time, and plan on a designated driver for the last stop.

Morning: a deli and a bakery on the way out

Andy's Produce Market on Gravenstein Highway North in Sebastopol is the budget-friendly place to fill a cooler: local fruit, a from-scratch deli counter, a cheese case, and beer and wine. It's open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. Stock up fully here: after Freestone, this route is all parks and beaches.

Then drive about 15 minutes west, on the road toward Bodega, to the hamlet of Freestone and Wild Flour Bread, a cult bakery known for its bread and sticky buns. It's open Friday through Monday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., takes no advance or phone orders, and has garden seating (no pets).

Driving up from the south instead? Della Fattoria in downtown Petaluma sells its famous naturally leavened loaves and sandwiches to go, Thursday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Doran is about 50 minutes on from there.

Lunch: sheltered tables at Doran Regional Park

About 20 minutes from Freestone, Doran Regional Park is a two-mile, south-facing sand beach on Bodega Bay backed by low dunes. Picnic tables sit in two day-use areas, Cypress and Jetty, where stands of Monterey pine and cypress give some shelter from the wind, and the bay-facing surf is noticeably gentler than on the open coast.

The rules:

• Parking: $8 per vehicle (free for Sonoma County Regional Parks members). Open 7 a.m. to sunset.
• Alcohol: allowed; Doran isn't on the county's list of parks that ban it.
• Fires: only in the grills provided, never on the beach, and charcoal and wood are banned on Red Flag, high-wind and Spare the Air days.
• Dogs: leashed (6-foot maximum), including on the beach; keep out of fenced snowy plover nesting areas.
• Crowds: on summer weekends the entrance closes once the lots fill.

Early afternoon: the cliffs at Bodega Head

Bodega Head is only about 2 miles away as the gull flies, but the road loops around the harbor, so allow about 10 minutes. This rugged headland at the mouth of Bodega Harbor has free parking, about ten picnic tables by the west lot and vault toilets, plus three more tables at Campbell Cove on the harbor side. The 1.9-mile Bodega Head loop starts at the west lot, and in winter and spring the cliffs are a top spot for watching gray whales.

It's exposed and often windy, so weigh down your picnic. Leashed dogs are allowed only in the parking lots and picnic areas, not on the trails or the Bodega Head beaches. Stay well back from the cliff edges.

Mid-afternoon: harbor seals at Goat Rock

Drive about 25 minutes north on Highway 1 to Goat Rock Beach, a broad beach running up to the mouth of the Russian River, where a harbor seal colony hauls out on the sand. Parking is free, about six picnic tables sit by the lot above the beach, and there are accessible restrooms.

Two rules matter here. Dogs aren't allowed on Goat Rock Beach because of the seals; leashed dogs can use Blind Beach, off the south lot, instead. And Goat Rock has deadly sneaker waves and rip currents: picnic well back from the surf, keep kids close and never turn your back on the ocean. Give the seals at least 50 yards, especially during pupping season from March through August.

On the way up, Wright's Beach has tables right next to the sand and allows leashed dogs on the beach ($10 day use). At Salmon Creek Beach, the free lots have vault toilets but no tables, and dogs aren't allowed on the beach.

Late afternoon: wine on the way home

From Jenner, Highway 116 follows the Russian River back inland. About 30 minutes on, Russian River Vineyards, just outside Forestville, serves wine and small bites from its own kitchen at a heated outdoor tasting area under shade trees. It's open until 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday (5 p.m. Monday through Thursday).

On a weekend, Taft Street Winery near Sebastopol is the alternative: it invites you to bring a picnic, has bocce and cornhole, charges $15 for a tasting, and is open Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

What to book ahead

Nothing for a small party: every table on this route is first-come. For groups, Doran's Miwok group site holds 25 to 50 people for $75 and books online from 12 months to three days ahead, and county rules require a permit for any gathering of 25 or more. Larger parties at the state beaches need a State Parks special-event permit.

Fog, rain or a full lot

Summer mornings on the coast are often foggy, and fog often burns off by midday, so a later lunch can mean more sun. On a wet day, keep the coast to a short look and eat inland: Russian River Vineyards' outdoor seating is heated, and Mom's Apple Pie, on Gravenstein Highway between Forestville and Sebastopol, has indoor tables and whole pies to take home. If Doran's lot is full, Bodega Head's tables are free and first-come, and Fort Ross, 12 winding miles north of Jenner, has picnic tables inside its reconstructed Russian stockade.
